Recovery of water from the treatment of slaughterhouse blood

Slaughterhouses produce Animal By-Products (ABP) such as blood, bones and fat not intended for human consumption.
These ABP are transported to “rendering” plants for their safe processing, disposal and reuse. In several European countries ABP processing has led to the establishment of a strong consortium of rendering plants imposing high fees for blood processing.

In many countries outside the EU, the management of ABP is not regulated and blood is disposed of directly into the environment. Furthermore, the substantial volume of blood produced leads to significant road transport which also negatively impacts on the environment.

Euro Mec and partners (left) are proud to have been granted European Commission funding for the development of the innovative ECOBLOOD Project for the Ecological Treatment of Blood in Slaughterhouses.
The project includes the development of two types of treatment plants:
  • Blood separator and coagulator manufactured by Slaughtering S.r.l. which sterilizes, coagulates and separates blood into a solid part (blood meal) and a liquid part(blood serum);
  • Euro Mec Membrane filtration wastewater treatment system (MBR5) treating the liquid part that cannot be sent directly to the biological treatment plant of the slaughterhouse due to its high organic component.

The treated water resulting from Euro Mec’s MBR5 plant can be re-used by slaughterhouses which thereby directly reduces water consumption.
At the same time the ECOBLOOD Project is also examining another environmentally friendly initiative for the generation of biogas using the solid blood meal.

The project 'sponsored by the European Commission EACI, the Ministry of the Environment and has the support of Eco-Innovation, Competitiveness and Innovation Programme of the European Union that supports innovatovi products, services and technologies allow better use of resources.
